Spent the day in the field to set up for experiments for the next day. The weather was variable, we were lucky. The storms passed on either side of us although a lightning storm approached just before lunch and we scooted out just in time. Although Carmen did not race back to the Van as there were some set ups on plants that she adjusted as the storm approached. We ate at a beach near where Aristotle lived and worked. We set up 2 transects of Yellow star-thistle (Centaurea soltitialis) and added to each plant (30 in each transect) a floral. Vitex agnus-castus sprigs will be placed in the floral tube with water. Dr. Barthell identified with students the plants to be included in the samples. The 2 transects were located about 1/2 km from each other. The vitex flowers bagged yesterday and the REU's took nectar samples to be recorded in their ever present logbooks.
All is ready for tomorrow's big field day.
Dr. Barthell goes over flower morphology

Nectar sample taken by inserting small capillary tube into floret of Yellow star

Setting up in the field
Sample floral tube although in reality Yellow star was not placed in floral tube
Getting ready to unbag flowers to sample nectar
