Day 11, June 15 (Getting a feel for the field)

add video 153 and 154 from j1611
Today was an exploratory day. A day to get out into the field to see the lay of the land. Look for flowering plants. We found Yellow star-thistle (Centaurea solstitialis) in abundance and flowering. Dr. Barthell and Dr. Hranitz noted to us that Vitex agnus-castus had flower buds but that they were not as far along as they would have expected. One thing you learn from this is that you cannot expect anything to be what you expect in the field--be ready to adapt and change plans.

We did some insect collecting, looking at transects and finding good supplies of plants for next day. We met with Dr. Theodora Petanidou, she is a professor of Geography at the University of the Aegean on Lesvos. She is an expert in pollination ecology and reproductive biology in plants
